So I picked up a digital copy of The Fall of Cadia and finished reading it sometime in the early hours of this morning. It's predominantly background material, with a short-ish section at the end detailing three formations and two of the new multi-army factions which we saw during the Warhammer Fantasy End Times.
The background begins in the immediate aftermath of the last Eye of Terror campaign with the Chaos forces having orbital superiority and the Imperium having tenuous control of the ground at Cadia. What follows is the most disappointing bit of writing I've read from GW since reading anything by James Swallow. The plot is poor and hamfisted with everyone's favourite mainstream Chapters shoehorned into place. Interested in any of the small chapters? Don't build your hopes up. In the space of a paragraph they are bundled into a battle barge and fired into the Chaos fleet for a successful suicide run.
The Arch-Magos has memory problems. The Inquisitor can't decide how puritan she is or when she should purge. The Saint is interesting but only occasionally, usually commented on from the point of view of the near-suicidal Creed, who spends the entire book deciding whether to retreat or not.
Oh and if you're a fan of the Imperial Fists, you're in luck. They are literally picked up at Terra and pitched into the oncoming Chaos fleet in the most awful plot development since Nemesis.
With only a three formations the rules don't even sell it. Some pretty pictures. Some nice colour text, but honestly save your money. This book was an enormous let down.
